Do you love to paint your model cars? Have you been painting them by hand but now want to learn a new technique? Why not learn to airbrush? Airbrushing your model car is something that is actually very easy to learn. You can get the basics down quickly and with a little practice you will get the advanced techniques as well.

Before you begin there are several items that you will need. Most of these can be picked up at a local hobby shop. Some of the local retail stores even carry kits that come with several of these items as well. The first thing you will want is a basic airbrush kit. It should come with the nozzles, hose, jars, covers, etc. It may or may not include a small compressor but your best bet is to find one that does. Just tell the salesperson what you are looking for and they should be able to point you in the right direction.

The next thing you need is personal protective equipment. These items will protect you from accidental inhalation as well as protecting your skin from the paints and cleaners. The items you need are latex gloves, safety goggles, and respiratory protection (breath mask). Painting supplies that you will need include airbrush paints, wet and dry sandpaper, rubbing alcohol, airbrush cleaner, and drafting tape. It is a wise idea to also pick up a small cheap bathroom fan to use for ventilation. Once you get everything home you are ready to build your paint booth.

Take an old cardboard box that is big enough for you to work on your model comfortably and cut out the top and one side. On the side opposite of the one you removed cut a hole big enough for the small fan to fit in. Place the fan in backwards so that it will vent air out of the box. This will provide adequate ventilation while you are airbrushing your car. Once you begin airbrushing you might want to wear a smock or an old shirt in case over spray gets on your clothes. Also, you should do your painting outside. The over spray that vents through fan can be blown all over the place and can make quite the mess. Some of this can also be prevented by loosely wiring a piece of cardboard over the side of the fan that is outside the box. This will allow some air to blow out but most of the paint should collect on the cardboard. Once you have built your simple paint booth you should be ready to begin.

Make sure that you have properly assembled your airbrush and are using a paint that is compatible with the model’s construction. It may be that your model requires a particular type of paint. Also, you should make sure whether or not you need to use primer for your model. If it is then you will start your project by priming each piece. One thing to watch for is that most adhesives have an issue with sticking to primers. You may want to carefully scrape away the primer from the area that will receive the glue. Before you actually begin to airbrush your model car you should practice your technique. Using a piece of scrap metal or plastic try painting with the brush a couple of times. One thing you will want to remember is that if you want to get a good even finish then you have to spray with an even stroke going from one side to the other. Make sure you do not release the trigger until you have gone a bit past.

Once you have airbrushed your first few models you will be ready to try some more advanced techniques. Before you do make sure you practice whatever stroke it is that you are going to attempt. With enough practice you will have little trouble picking up these advanced techniques.

From a bland beginning hand painted models soon became very beautiful works of art. With experience came better techniques and greater detail. Those who have been painting their model cars for some time now can apply a paint job that will easily rival any that would be available commercially for a full size car.

One drawback to hand painting is the time it takes. You must apply a bit of paint and wait for what seems like forever. Slowly building layer upon layer could take quite a bit of time. Some strokes such as feathering can seem almost impossible to those who do not have the skill. An upside to hand painting however is the easy at which you can paint small parts without having to worry about spreading the paint around where you don’t want it.

Airbrushing is the new kid on the block relatively speaking. Home airbrush kits have only been available for a short time considering the age of the model car building hobby itself. At first the kits were extremely expensive and had to be special ordered. Paints were difficult to work with and as the methods of using airbrushing was relatively unknown there was a very steep learning curve. Modelers soon began picking up the pace however when they figured out the upsides to airbrushing.

One of these is the reduced drying time. When you airbrush your model car now it takes very little time to dry due to the small amount of paint that you are able to put down. This allows model builders to add layer after layer both quickly and efficiently. An airbrush is also very consistent with the amount of paint you are applying. The amount of control you have over your techniques is very handy as well. You can feather like a pro once you practice a bit and you can add most any detail you want.

Whether to airbrush or hand paint model cars is something that will continue to be debated as time goes on. Many people will choose sides just as many people will defect from one camp to the other. As to which method is right for you is something you will have to find out for yourself.

Have you ever noticed a model car on which the paint job just seems to fade from one color to the next? This is what is known as feathering. Rather than having a sharp line between colors they have differing degrees of a fade depending on the look that is desired.

When feathering a model car it can be very hard to achieve the scale that is seen in show vehicles. Most models will have very sharp lines between their colors. This means they were most likely painted by hand. Even the airbrushed ones can appear different from their real world counter part due to the scale of the feathering being off. The easiest way to remember proper scale is that if a model car has a one inch feathering and you are working on a 1/32 car then your feather would have to be 1/32.

You could just paint your model car but you know that a bit of feathering can make the difference between looking good and looking great. Now, how do you get it just right? With the right trick you can get exactly the amount of feathering that you want. One thing you will learn as you paint more and more of your own models is that the closer your mask is to the car the less feathering you will get in the paint job. The secret to getting the perfect mask is to get your mask close enough to the model yet not too close. You absolutely must also maintain that distance consistently.

The best methods to get this mask is to use Frisket Paper. This is a special paper that is transparent and has been prepared so that it can be used to protect artwork from damage if an artist needs to work on other sections. If you do not have access to Frisket Paper then you can use a thin sheet of paraffin wax just as well. Cut the shape you are attempting to cover out of the paper or wax. Then you take a piece of fishing line and apply it to the back side of the paper or wax near the edge to receive the feathering. If you need to you can use a toothpick to make sure you reach the right distance.

If you are looking to add a very small bit of feathering then you will probably want to place the line about 1/16th of an inch away from the edge of your masking material. This will give the paint a small but noticeable feather. By holding the mask just above the surface of your model car the fishing line allows a small bit of paint to overlap your other paint job. If you want to increase or decrease the amount of mask all you have to do is to use a heaver or lighter fishing line. This will also allow you to achieve a paint scheme for your model car that is much closer to scale than what it would have been.

One thing you will want to do is to insure that your fishing line is far away from the edge of the mask medium. If the paint can reach the fishing line you will end up with a hard line… the very thing you were trying to avoid in the first place. It may take a bit of trial and error but you will soon be feathering like a pro. Once you go to remove your masking medium just take your time and be easy about it so that you don’t inadvertently remove paint as well.

The most important consideration is to choose a paint gun that feels “right” to you, one that is comfortable in your hand.

The first thing to mention about auto paint jobs is that you should always work in a well ventilated area. Paint fumes can include a number of solvents that can leave you feeling light headed and even poison you if you inhale them, so make sure there is free passage of air through your work shop when you are painting. You should also wear a respirator mask during painting or preparation to avoid inhaling any paint and loose dust that you release.

To get the best effects when painting, you also need to make sure that you are able to keep dust to a minimum. You can achieve a good environment by hanging sheets from floor to ceiling in the area where you are working, and wearing overalls. You should also vacuum clean the area where you are painting at the beginning of every session.

When you apply auto body paint, the main thing is to get a good even finish that looks good, and the key to getting a good finish is having a good start. Preparation is everything in paining. Get it right, and you will be able to enjoy a fantastic smooth finish that will last for years and look great, skimp on your preparation, and your finish will look shabby straight away, and then get worse over time.

Before you paint, you need to strip off the old paint job. You can do this with a solvent based paint remover, or do it the hard way by sanding back the panels to bare metal using a sander. Whichever method you choose, you need to make sure that you have a very smooth base. To achieve this, use the finest grade abrasive paper available, and be prepared to put serious time into the job.

Once you are satisfied with your base, you can start applying the primer. Use a HLVP spray gun connected to an air compressor, as this is much more even than an aerosol, and will be much cheaper in the long run. You should use long sweeping strokes in a single direction to get a good base to paint onto. After every coat, allow the paint to dry, and then sand it back to a smooth surface. Then apply the next coat in strokes that go at 90 degrees to the previous layer, as this will produce an even color.

There are two types of auto paint that you can use on a car, cellulose based and Two Pack auto paint. Most painters now use Two Pack because it gives a better finish, and metallic colors are available, whereas cellulose paint can be tricky to deal with, and is best used on classic cars where you are trying to recapture an older style.

As with the primer, you should apply the auto paint in coats, spraying in a single direction, then sanding back to a fine surface to remove any imperfections, before applying the next layer at right angles to the previous one.

In between coats, it is imperative to clean the nozzles on your HVLP spray gun, as otherwise, small flakes of dried paint can be caught up in the spray and cause imperfections that will spoil the final effect.

Once you are satisfied that you have got a good covering and applied enough coats of auto body paint to create an excellent finish, apply one more coat for best effects, allow it to dry, and then sand back for a smooth finish. You should leave the paint to dry completely for 24 hours and then apply a wax polish to the whole body in order to protect your new paint job and give it a shine that will certainly catch the attention of anyone you pass on the road.
